In the midst of cold weather, we often worry about keeping our homes warm. Depending on how well you take care of it, the average life expectancy of an HVAC system is between 15 and 20 years. Alternatively, the average HVAC repair runs between $70 and $800, so it’s a good idea to keep this system in tip-top shape. That’s why many homeowners choose home warranty coverage to protect themselves from the sudden high cost of a heating system breakdown.
If you’re worried about how much longer your heating system will last, follow these tips to keep it going for as long as possible. And while you’re at it, if you don’t already have coverage, get your free quote today to protect it down the line.
1. Change the filters.
Changing your heating system’s filters will enhance the air quality in your home, plus your unit won’t have to work as hard to move air. This is easy enough to do yourself, but we also highly recommend scheduling routine maintenance with a technician who can manage this for you and assess the whole system on an annual basis.
Start by identifying where your filter is placed – usually in the return air duct. The filter should pop out easily. Be sure you place the new filter with the correct side facing up. You’ll have to order replacement filters ahead of time; we recommend changing these filters at least every 90 days.
2. Replace refrigerant line insulation.
For homes with an HVAC unit, a common problem is that the insulation around the system’s refrigerant line tends to degrade. Letting this problem go unchecked not only decreases the efficiently of your home’s HVAC system, but can also cause mold growth due to condensation.
Once you identify your refrigerant line, there are a few ways you can choose to add insulation. You can use foam or fiberglass insulation that either self-seals around the line or requires electrical tape to secure in place, or you can use slit insulation that wraps around the line and leaves an opening for condensation to drip.
3. Clean and watch for debris.
Give your heating system a brief inspection to check for any debris that might be blocking air vents. A quick visual inspection might show you that, from the outside, a bush has become overgrown and is blocking air flow.
For a deeper clean, eliminating dust from within the air vents will also help your system last longer and your family will breathe easier. Do this with a vacuum hose, paper towels, and a brush.
If you’re still looking for ways to give your heating system a boost, consider checking for drafts around your windows, doors, and walls. Then winterize your home. Adding insulation to these areas will make your heating more efficient, lowering your monthly bill and putting less stress on your heating system.
